Jean Foillard is one of the best-known and most respected winemakers in all of Beaujolais. It has quickly become obvious that the grape doesn’t fall far from the vine. Alex Foillard’s first vintage was 2016, and he is moving fast. These wines, made with whole clusters and via carbonic maceration in concrete tanks, with ambient yeast, are energetic and finely detailed, even in the hot 2018 and 2017 vintages. Foillard’s 2019s have turned out to be knockouts, but unfortunately, production here is still small. Note that the Brouilly is the only wine that sees oak; 50% of it is aged in barrels for six months. Alex Foillard is definitely a producer to follow.

Beaujolais-Villages is made from 70-year-old vines grown in limestone and sand soils. Always a delight, this wine is also always dangerously drinkable! It is incredibly fresh as you would imagine – pure crisp and snappy red fruit aromas leap from the glass. Truly all you could ever want from a Beaujolais Villages.
