Sholto is a lucky guy, and he knows it. His father, Philip, was among the first to plant Bordeaux varieties in Basket Range in the Adelaide Hills back in the 1980s. It’s now a sustainably managed, 4.5-hectare Basket Range vineyard—a steep slope at 450 metres covering various exposures and soil types (sandstone with ironstone and clay throughout). The Cabernet, Merlot and Petit Verdot are rooted in the northern hillsides, ensuring these mature vines soak up plenty of that temperate afternoon sunshine and ripen fully in this cool climate. Sholto’s winemaking channels purity, cloaked in site and season. From the slightly cooler conditions of 2023, these traits are bell-clear and utterly delicious.
Basket Range’s Estate suite also includes sublime, mature-vine Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. These vines are rooted on the cooler, southeast-facing slopes on the property, ensuring lengthy hangtime to build aromatics, deep flavour and structural complexity while maintaining brilliantly fresh natural acidity. Showing restraint and insight in the cellar, Sholto has translated these stunning parcels into classic, profound wines of character.
