The AOC Jasnières and Coteaux-du-Loir are located about 30 miles north of the city of Tours, these are both tiny appellations of barely 130 hectares each and with most already planted. They are isolated, at the edges of three provinces, Maine, Anjou and Touraine. They are also the most northern viticultural areas in the west of France (in the east, only Chablis, Champagne and Alsace are further north).
Both Jasnières and the Coteaux-du-Loir lie about 100m above sea level on clay/limestone soils. In Jasnières, only white wine from Chenin Blanc is produced and the very slightly warmer and more humid climate means that the wines are a little softer than those from the Coteaux-du-Loir where red wines are also permitted; in the case of Domaine de Bellivière, from the peppery and bright Pineau d’Anuis which is very rare and has recently become extremely sought after in Paris.
Bellivière wines are made in a very natural manner but are meticulous and fine. The cellar is carved out of the hillside tuffeau and maintains consistent temperature and humidity (thus there is zero temperature control of any kind). The grapes are pressed and lightly sulfured; the juice is fermented with native yeasts, which Eric refers to as “the wine’s umbilical cord”.
