From their home in Rablay-sur-Layon, this modest couple has risen quietly but decisively to international recognition in recent years, and their wines are now among the hardest to source worldwide. With just over 4 hectares of certified organic vineyards, they produce only minute quantities of site-specific wines that truly capture the character of their unique terroirs.
By keeping their holdings deliberately small, they are able to manage every detail themselves, ensuring quality is never compromised. Their new underground cellar has allowed for even greater precision in winemaking: clean, meticulous, and deeply attentive. In 2022, they introduced new 15hl Alsatian foudres, bringing an added dimension to their wines with outstanding results.
The Batardières craft some of the most compelling expressions of Chenin Blanc we know – wines that I hold in the same esteem as those of Richard Leroy and Stéphane Bernaudeau.
