Beulah Violetta is an organic farm located in Canonica, Umbria, covering approximately 32 hectares, with 10 hectares currently under vine. The entire estate is farmed biodynamically, relying solely on solar power and artesian water.
Annie Conley and James Hird purchased the property in 2022 and have spent the past three growing seasons enhancing biodiversity and refining their farming practices. “After years of searching across Southern France and throughout Italy, we found a unique microclimate overlooking the hilltop town of Todi. The Tiber Valley, where our vineyard is situated, has been home to wine, wheat, and olive production since Roman times.”
The vineyards sit at an altitude of 450–500 meters above sea level, with predominantly clay soils interspersed with limestone pockets. Four hectares consist of existing dry-farmed vineyards, approximately 22 years old, planted with Sangiovese, Sagrantino, and Merlot. Over the past two winters, Annie and James have expanded the vineyard by an additional six hectares, planting Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Trebbiano Spoletino, and Trebbiano Toscano.
In their first vintage, they sold the grapes while focusing on establishing and converting the farm. They began producing wine in 2022 and 2023, initially crafting a large field blend until all vineyards are in full production, at which point they will introduce different labels.
Beyond wine, the farm cultivates Grano Antico (ancient grain) wheat for pasta production, olives for olive oil, and a distinctive Sagrantino vinegar. They also maintain a commercial-scale vegetable garden.
