Cisteller, in Spanish cestero, is much more than the name of a small family winery in the Penedès. It is, in fact, a profound statement of intent. For centuries, the cisteller was a pivotal figure in traditional viticulture. They hand-wove the baskets used for harvesting, transporting grapes, and accompanying the wine’s lifecycle. Their craft spoke of patience, skill, and respect for natural materials. It was a manual, silent, and essential occupation. Precisely like the one that inspires every bottle from this young winery in the Penedès.
Cisteller was established in 2022, quite literally at the hands of Jessica Madigan and Sergi Canals. She hails from Florida, he from Catalonia, and they met amidst test tubes and fermentations at the University of Davis (California). After exploring some of the world’s most iconic wine regions together, they decided to return home; to the family estate of El Sot, in the Ordal mountains (Subirats).
