The domaine is now farming 6 hectares of vines. One plot is 15km away but all the rest are close to the house in Sampigny – the furthest of those is just 500m away.
Hugo laughs:
“Our highest parcel of Maranges is actually higher than our Hautes Côtes!! We also have some new 1er cru, but it’s a small plot, the rent is paid in bottles! Our new plots are in conversion to organic viticulture, the rest of the domaine is already organic.
“French département 71 (Saône-et-Loire) where Maranges sits, is more agricultural than the more viticultural département 21 of the Côte-d’Or – so more chemicals are used, on average. So more of the grapes are sold at harvest time from 71. “We had a little hail yesterday, but only one side was touched – we don’t deleaf so there was extra protection. Still, some of the berries were touched, but currently they are small and hard.”
